Zorn Gives Up

This is really pretty amazing. I don't think I've ever seen an NFL head coach use language like this. Okay, I take that back. I do remember Darryl Rogers saying "What does a guy have to do to get fired around here?'' back in 1988 (he was fired a few games later), but seeing a coach so thoroughly defeated it still pretty startling.

What he told reporters at Redskins Park yesterday:

With the responsibility that every head coach has, the accountability factor is [ultimate] really," Zorn said. "It really makes the difference in success or failure, and I certainly am accountable for our football season. No question about it. And I'll be held accountable. It's awful. It really is. "But I try not to lose heart myself, I want to stay positive. Our players inspire me, our coaching staff inspires me because we're working hard. To try to make good decisions and sound decisions, that's really what I'm trying to contend with.

"That's what I'm trying to contend with. Not just give up, and not just go 'woe is me' and sink back into a hole. I try to face what's before me. It's difficult. I'll be a better coach because of what I'm going through. It's just hard to go through it."
As much as I dislike the Redskins I find it impossible to dislike or root against Zorn. Wrong guy, wrong time, bad situation for anyone.

Of course assuming Zorn is gone it should be very entertaining to see the Redskins try to attract any credible coaching candidates.

  1. Yes, that will be interesting. Imagine Danny's surprise when he discovers that Bill Cowher & Mike Shanahan & Mike Holmgren don't think his money is as green as everyone else's.

Of more immediate interest is watching the Skins get evaporated by the Saints next week.

I agree with you that it's impossible to dislike Zorn. I hope he gets a nice coordinator gig after all this is over.

  2. By the way, I think it's possible to misinterpret Zorn's remarks above. He's a religious guy, and he has a rep for being disarmingly frank, esp about spiritual matters. In the quote he could just be trying to exemplify how to deal with the pains associated with the Redskins record.

He is a very, very unusual guy for an NFL head coach. Interesting.

  3. Also have to wonder if it's an underhanded shot at Snyder.

Agree on him being a likable guy. I think he's a poor NFL HC, but we all knew that when he was hired. Classic example of a guy hired for a job he was in no way qualified for, and couldn't succeed because of that. It's sad to say, but he deserves to be fired...simply because he's just not good at his job.

But Danny-boy deserves to be roasted for what he's done. Put aside for a moment that it may well have been a situation where there wasn't a better candidate available (*cough* Fassel). Even if that were true - and it may certainly be this off-season - his treatment of Zorn has been an embarrassment. It's one of the major reasons it's unlikely he can get any of the big names in the door.

    To the Bills...Mike Shanahan!
    To the Browns...Mike Homgren!
    To the Panthers...Bill Cowher!
    To the Redskins.....Ken Zampese!
